Senegalese Player Pape Cheikh Diop: "A Family Member I Considered Like a Father Stole All My Money and Destroyed My Life"
Former Olympique Lyon midfielder, Senegalese Pape Cheikh Diop, has broken his silence, speaking in an interview with Spanish newspaper "AS" about one of the most difficult periods of his life. He revealed he was defrauded by someone he considered a father figure.
Diop, who has since moved to Promesas EDF, a club in Spain's amateur divisions, explained that the incident occurred approximately three years ago while he was playing for Greek club Aris Thessaloniki. He stated that the individual exploited his absolute trust to seize all his assets.
The Senegalese player did not hide the extent of his shock, stating: "About three years ago, when I arrived at Aris Thessaloniki, a family member whom I trusted absolutely took everything I owned. He seized the money in my bank account, my properties, and completely destroyed me. Everything happened very quickly, and by the time I realized what had happened, I had nothing left."
The 28-year-old added: "My mother asked me not to mention his name, but he was like a father to me. I grew up with him because my biological father abandoned me when I was one year old. He wasn't blood-related, but he was like my father, and he accompanied me throughout my career. I did everything he said and trusted him blindly."
Diop, who represented the Senegalese national team in two matches in 2020, continued: "I signed a document that authorized him to act and sign on my behalf. That was a huge mistake on my part, but I never imagined something like this could happen. He stole houses, cars, and money from me. I wouldn't wish what I've been through on my worst enemy. Now, I will find it very difficult to trust people."
The former Celta Vigo and Elche player remarked: "I filed a complaint, but no one knows his whereabouts; he has disappeared. I was in Senegal, trying to sort things out and complete administrative procedures, but I have nothing left. I have to start from scratch. He left me in complete ruin. I have zero euros in the bank. I had earned money and saved millions, but he took everything."
Diop's current goal is to relaunch his career and return to the Spanish league, despite acknowledging that the path will not be easy, as he is starting from a very distant point.
This story serves as a clear warning to other players, amidst growing debate surrounding the management of professional athletes' finances and assets.
