PSG Requests Lens Match Postponement, French League to Decide
Paris Saint-Germain has formally requested the postponement of their Ligue 1 match against Lens, scheduled for April 11, to focus on their UEFA Champions League quarter-final commitments. However, Lens has rejected this proposal, citing its potential negative impact on the balance of their upcoming fixture schedule.
This move by the Parisian club comes ahead of their two-legged tie against Liverpool in the continental competition, with matches scheduled for April 8 and 14. PSG aims to alleviate fixture congestion. Meanwhile, Lens, currently second in the league standings, believes that rescheduling the match from Week 29 to between Weeks 33 and 34 would result in a two-week technical break followed by playing three matches in a single week.
In a related development, Strasbourg has followed suit, submitting a similar request to postpone their match against Stade Brest due to its overlap with their UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-final participation. This presents the French Professional Football League (LFP) with two cases requiring a decision at a time when the domestic competition is witnessing an intense battle for top positions.
The LFP's board of directors is scheduled to meet this Thursday morning to make a final decision on these postponement requests. It's worth noting that the league, which has the authority to modify the annual calendar, previously approved a postponement for Paris Saint-Germain's match against Nantes earlier in the season to enhance the team's chances in the European knockout stages.
