Lens Fans Protest French League Over PSG Match Postponement
Groups representing 34 fan associations of French club Lens sent an official letter to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) on Tuesday, protesting the French Football League's (LFP) decision to postpone their upcoming match against Paris Saint-Germain. In their memorandum, the associations demanded the reversal of the rescheduling decision, arguing that the LFP's action, taken to support the Parisian club in the UEFA Champions League, constitutes an arbitrary application of regulations and directly undermines the principle of sporting fairness.
The LFP had decided to move the match from April 11 to May 13, despite opposition from Lens. The league justified its decision by citing the need to support Paris Saint-Germain in their European campaign and to maintain Ligue 1's UEFA coefficient ranking. In their letter to the CNOSF, Lens supporters stated: "It is unreasonable that the integrity of Lens' season-end should be a variable to serve the European ambitions of Paris Saint-Germain," emphasizing that the postponement was imposed on their club without its consent, thereby harming sporting equality in the competition.
The fan protests are centered on what they describe as the illegitimate application of Article 411 of the LFP's competition regulations. Lens supporters stated: "Our opposition is based on a clear arbitrary application of Article 411 of the French League competition regulations." Protesters argue that this decision tarnishes the image of the domestic competition by exempting clubs involved in European competitions from national obligations, especially as Lens is currently the closest challenger to the Parisian team in the title race. However, current indications suggest that the CNOSF may not consider the case, as the request did not originate from an official stakeholder in the sport.
