Motsepe Reveals Plans to Expand AFCON to 28 Teams
Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), acknowledged that the executive committee of the football body is discussing amendments to regulations and disciplinary sanctions, though he did not disclose the details.
Motsepe also pledged to further develop the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in upcoming editions, hinting at potential modifications to the competition's format.
The CAF President confirmed in a press conference following the executive committee meeting: "We plan to increase the number of participants in the Africa Cup of Nations from 24 to 28 teams."
It is worth noting that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will proceed as scheduled in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, as confirmed by Motsepe, and it could be the last edition to feature 24 teams.
