Kenyan Organizing Committee Chairman: "Postponing AFCON 2027 for a Year Will Benefit Our Country"
Kenyan Organizing Committee Chairman, Nicholas Musonye, reacted to the news of a potential one-year postponement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, confirming that the decision would benefit his country, which is set to co-host the tournament with Tanzania and Uganda.
The British newspaper "The Guardian" had previously reported on the possibility of postponing the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations from 2027 to 2028 due to the host nations' lack of readiness for the competition.
Musonye told Agence France-Presse (AFP): "The postponement will be in Kenya's favour because our country will be preparing for parliamentary and presidential elections in August 2027."
He added, explaining: "We have witnessed the instability surrounding these elections in Tanzania, Uganda, and even Kenya. Security would not be guaranteed for such an important competition."
It is worth noting that Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda were also awarded the hosting rights for the 2025 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), a tournament previously won by Morocco. This competition was also postponed from earlier in the year to the summer due to incomplete stadium works in the host nations.
