Trial of Algerian and Senegalese Fans Involved in AFCON Final Riots Postponed; Defense Lawyer Announces Hunger Strike
The Rabat Criminal Court of First Instance has decided to postpone the trial session of Senegalese fans and one Algerian fan, following incidents of rioting and violence at the Africa Cup of Nations "Morocco 2025" final, which was scheduled for yesterday, Thursday (February 5).
The session has been adjourned until next Thursday (February 12) due to a lawyers' union strike, which has impacted judicial proceedings across the Kingdom's courts.
Eighteen Senegalese fans, including an Algerian national, were arrested following the acts of rioting and violence at the AFCON final. Senegalese supporters had attacked stadium workers, stormed the pitch, and engaged in vandalism before security forces intervened to control the situation.
The defense lawyer announced in a statement to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the defendants have decided to begin a hunger strike starting today, Friday. This action is in protest against their interrogation in French and Arabic, as they reportedly only understand the local Wolof language.
