CAF Sanctions Against Morocco and Senegal Limited to Continental Competitions; FIFA Did Not Request Expansion
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) this Thursday morning issued a series of disciplinary sanctions following the events that occurred during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat.
CAF clarified that the penalties imposed on Moroccan players Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari, as well as Senegal national team coach Pape Thiaw and several of his players, will only apply during CAF competitions and not at the international level.
This decision stems from FIFA granting CAF the authority to make disciplinary decisions related to the Africa Cup of Nations final, without requesting the expansion of these sanctions to include global competitions. Additionally, FIFA's legal department does not see the possibility of applying these sanctions outside the scope of CAF, thereby limiting them to continental competitions only.
Senegal claimed the African title after defeating Morocco in the final with a clean sheet, thanks to a goal scored by Pape Gueye.
