Saibari Reflects on AFCON Final Loss: "We Were Very Close, But It Wasn't Meant to Be, I Apologize for My Mistake in the Final"
Moroccan international Ismael Saibari expressed his profound sadness after the national team missed the opportunity to clinch the Africa Cup of Nations title, following their 1-0 defeat to Senegal in the final.
Saibari shared his feelings in a post on his official Instagram account: “After two days, the sadness and pain are still as strong as they were after the match. We were very close, all of us together, but it was not meant to be. Despite the sadness and disappointment, there is also a deep sense of pride in what we delivered on all fronts.”
The Moroccan international added: “On the pitch, with all the players and staff, the way we fought, ran, and gave our all. The motivation, hunger, and determination were present in each one of us, but it was not destined.”
He continued: “Off the pitch, with the fans, the way you supported us from beginning to end, your encouragement and pushing us forward. Your support carried us through the matches.”
Saibari went on: “It was an honor for me to play in the best organized Africa Cup of Nations edition ever, for my country and in my country. Without forgetting the honor of wearing these colors and this emblem, and for this, I would like to thank His Majesty the King for all he provides for football and for this country, as well as Fouzi Lekjaa.”
He concluded: “But the greatest honor was working together with the entire group, Walid Regragui, and his technical staff. This only confirms that we are on the right track. And if we continue to work hard and remain humble as we are now, there are great things that can be achieved for us in the future.”
The PSV Eindhoven player ended his post with: “Dima Maghrib (Forever Morocco). God, Homeland, King. Note: My action in the final was emotionally driven but incorrect. I am aware of the mistake I made, and for this, I offer my apology.”
