Lula da Silva Discusses Neymar's Readiness with Ancelotti Ahead of 2026 World Cup
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has revealed details of a conversation he had with national team coach Carlo Ancelotti regarding the potential call-up of star player Neymar for the upcoming World Cup. Lula da Silva clarified that Neymar possesses the technical level required to be part of the Brazilian squad, provided he achieves full physical readiness before the tournament begins. The Brazilian President stated: "I discussed the matter with Ancelotti, and he asked me: Do you think Neymar should be called up? I replied: If he is physically ready, he has the necessary level for it."
In this context, Carlo Ancelotti has set a two-month deadline for Neymar to prove his physical and technical capabilities before making his final decision. He emphasized that his choices would be based on the players most prepared for the finals, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Brazil coach said: "I will call up the players who are physically ready. After his knee injury, Neymar has returned well and is scoring goals. He must continue on this path and improve his condition; he is on the right track." The Italian coach also indicated that the opportunity is still open for the player, stating: "He still has two months to show he possesses the necessary qualifications to play in the next World Cup."
Neymar has been absent from the Brazilian national team since October 2023, and coach Ancelotti has not called up the team's all-time leading scorer since taking over last year. In his effort to regain his usual form, Neymar has participated in only 7 out of 21 official matches with his club Santos this current season. However, the player still maintains his status as Brazil's top scorer in history with 79 goals, surpassing legend Pelé by two goals.
The Brazilian Football Confederation is scheduled to announce the final 26-player squad on May 18, ahead of the World Cup competitions, which will take place between June 11 and July 19. Fans are eagerly awaiting the coaching staff's final decision regarding Neymar, especially given Ancelotti's strict physical criteria to ensure the squad's readiness for global competition.
