Romário: "Brazil Has Declined Technically But Can Win World Cup Thanks to History and Experience"
Brazilian legend Romário has addressed the current state of football in his homeland, acknowledging significant challenges just two months ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
In an interview with French newspaper L'Équipe, Romário stated: "Brazilian football is no longer what it once was. It's no longer capable of producing a player who aspires to win the Ballon d'Or, as was the case fifteen or twenty years ago."
He continued: "Technically, Brazil's level has declined significantly. Since the generation of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and Rivaldo, things have become difficult. After that, we started relying on only one player: Neymar, and our youth leave Brazil early for Europe, joining smaller clubs where they lose their footballing identity."
Despite public skepticism surrounding the upcoming 2026 World Cup, Romário expressed optimism about Brazil's chances. "People don't believe much anymore. But this was also the case before the 1994 World Cup. With coach Carlo Ancelotti, my confidence has returned. We must unite to end the 24-year streak without winning the World Cup."
While Neymar enjoys widespread support for a return to the national team, the 1994 World Cup winner urged caution. "You cannot rely on just one player, especially if he is fragile. This is risky."
Addressing Neymar's potential participation in the 2026 World Cup, Romário reiterated: "You cannot rely on just one player, especially if he is prone to injuries. It is risky."
He concluded: "We now have good players like Raphinha and Vinicius, in addition to young talents like João Pedro and Estêvão. Brazil can become champions, thanks to its history and experience, and if Neymar regains his fitness."
Brazil has been drawn into Group C for the World Cup, alongside Morocco, Scotland, and Haiti.
