Sharp Increase in Train Ticket Prices for World Cup Matches in Boston Angers Fans
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced that round-trip train tickets from South Station in downtown Boston to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough for the 2026 World Cup group stage matches will cost $80. This new fare represents more than a fourfold increase over the usual price of $17.50, sparking outrage among fans planning to support teams like Scotland, England, and France in the tournament.
Fan associations have expressed their dismay at this decision, pointing out that supporters face financial exploitation given the stadium's 22-mile distance from Boston city center, a journey that takes approximately an hour by train. Paul Goodwin, co-founder of the Scottish Football Supporters Association, stated that the new prices are "completely out of order," while the Football Supporters' Association (FSA) in England described the situation as "hugely disappointing."
The Football Supporters' Association (FSA) in England elaborated in a statement: "We are extremely disappointed that this situation has been allowed to happen. Organisers had a duty to ensure fans could access a stadium located a long way from its stated location at reasonable prices, yet fans are being exploited as so often happens at this tournament." Gillette Stadium is set to host significant matches, including England vs. Ghana on June 23, France vs. Norway on June 26, and Scotland's matches against Haiti on June 14 and Morocco on June 19.
Reports indicate that rail tickets for these services will be limited in number and non-refundable, while parking fees at Gillette Stadium during these events will start from $175. These developments come amidst preparations for the global finals, which the United States will host between June 11 and July 19, 2026, with increasing criticism regarding the costs of accessing stadiums located outside the urban areas of the host cities.
