FIFA Officially Announces Senegal's Drop to 14th, Over 20 Points Deducted
The latest FIFA Men's World Ranking has seen new changes following the adoption of the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) decision regarding the Africa Cup of Nations final, which concluded with Morocco being crowned champions at the expense of Senegal.
The recent update on FIFA's website shows Senegal dropping to 14th globally, having previously held the 12th position in the January rankings, with a decrease in their points total. Conversely, the Moroccan national team benefited from this decision, increasing their total points without changing their ranking, remaining stable at eighth worldwide.
This change comes after FIFA adopted the final match result as a victory for Morocco by walkover, in line with CAF's decision. This directly impacted the distribution of points in the world rankings, leading to an increase in points for the "Atlas Lions" and a deduction for the Senegalese national team.
Senegal had climbed to 12th in the FIFA rankings after the Africa Cup of Nations, raising their total to 1706.83 points. With the latest update on FIFA's website, the "Teranga Lions" have fallen to 14th place, with points deducted from their total, now standing at 1684.85 points.
In a related development, the Senegalese Football Federation has decided to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge the decision to withdraw the title and consider them as having withdrawn from the AFCON 2025 final.
