Infantino: "Trump Welcomes Iranian National Team's Participation in 2026 World Cup"
FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that US President Donald Trump pledged during their meeting on Tuesday to welcome the Iranian national team to the World Cup scheduled for next summer.
Infantino wrote in a post on his official Instagram account: "This evening, I met with the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, to discuss preparations for the upcoming World Cup, and the growing excitement as the tournament approaches with only 93 days left."
Infantino added: "We also discussed the current situation in Iran, and the fact that the Iranian national team has qualified for the 2026 World Cup. During our discussions, President Trump reaffirmed that the Iranian national team is, of course, welcome to participate in the tournament in the United States."
He continued: "We all need an event like the World Cup to bring people together now more than ever. I would like to sincerely thank the President of the United States for his support, as it demonstrates once again that football unites the world."
This confirmation comes after Iran's participation in the World Cup had become doubtful, following strikes launched by the United States and Israel this month against Iran.
