Spain Coach Optimistic About Nico Williams' 2026 World Cup Return, May Miss Finalissima
Spain national football team coach Luis de la Fuente has expressed optimism regarding Nico Williams' recovery from injury, hinting at his potential participation in the 2026 World Cup. The Spanish winger is currently racing against time to return to action after suffering a groin injury last September, undergoing an intensive treatment program to ensure his readiness for upcoming international commitments.
De la Fuente explained in statements reported by Spanish newspaper "AS" that the player's health has shown significant improvement after two weeks of treatment. He affirmed that Williams feels much better now, despite needing to complete a specific rehabilitation phase. De la Fuente stated, "Nico is going through this development phase, and he feels much better now after these two weeks of treatment. He will certainly be ready in time. It might be too early for the Finalissima, but he should be back for the World Cup if he continues with this process."
The Spain coach emphasized the importance of the player reaching the global finals in his best physical condition, noting that his current absence aims to give him sufficient time for full recovery. In this context, he indicated that "if he does not face any further setbacks in his recovery, he will arrive in ideal physical condition" to represent the team in the World Cup hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Consequently, Williams' participation in the Finalissima match remains unlikely, a technical and medical decision aimed at preventing any regression in his health, with full focus on preparing him for the most prominent global event. The player's absence is significant given his pivotal role in the squad, but current expectations suggest he will be able to regain his natural place before the World Cup kicks off.
