FIFA Unveils AI Innovations for 2026 World Cup
FIFA has announced the introduction of major artificial intelligence innovations set to be implemented during the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. This edition will be the first to feature 48 participating teams.
Among the most prominent developments announced is the 3D modeling of all 1,248 participating players (26 players for each of the 48 teams). This innovation aims to enhance semi-automated offside decisions, with players being scanned in a matter of seconds. This technology has been successfully tested on Flamengo and Pyramids FC.
In partnership with Lenovo, FIFA will also use AI to improve referee camera images and provide equal access to advanced statistics for all 48 teams through the "Football AI Pro" system. In this regard, FIFA stated: "Football AI Pro aims to address this imbalance by enabling all 48 teams participating in the most important tournament to benefit from the same advanced analytical capabilities, both before and after matches."
FIFA President Gianni Infantino commented on these developments, saying: "AI-powered 3D avatars will ensure precise player identification and tracking... but of course, this is all just the beginning."
