Hugo Broos: "Organizing AFCON Every Four Years Will Positively Impact World Cup Teams"
South Africa national team coach Hugo Broos shared his views on the Confederation of African Football (CAF)'s decision to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years starting from 2028. Broos made his comments at the press conference preceding his team's match against Egypt, part of the second round of the AFCON group stage.
During the press conference, Broos highlighted the difficulty of the current schedule. He stated, "Just days ago, we had the Club World Cup in June, then the Africa Cup of Nations, and six months later, the World Cup."
He added that this congested calendar poses a significant challenge for African teams that qualify for the World Cup. Broos mentioned that his own team had to take a short break to refocus before the current tournament in December, following their involvement in the World Cup qualifiers.
Regarding the new tournament system, Broos stated, "The new system for the Africa Cup of Nations will allow teams to focus more on each tournament they participate in, and it will help African teams achieve better results in the World Cup."
