Broos on AFCON Exit: "Our Opponents Have European Professionals, Unlike Us – A Disadvantage for South Africa"
South Africa national team coach Hugo Broos commented on his team's elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations following their loss to Cameroon, discussing the disparities between his squad and other teams, particularly concerning the presence of players in European leagues.
Broos stated in media remarks: "When you look at the teams we face, you find they have players active in Europe, and we do not possess that."
He continued: "This is a significant disadvantage for South Africa. Even when you play against Angola, you find they have professional players in Europe, not to mention other teams that enjoy this privilege."
He added: "Cameroon has a new team after many changes. When you look at where their players play, you find, for example, the 19-year-old striker Koufani, who plays for Bayer Leverkusen, which reflects the level of competition these players are accustomed to."
He further explained: "This is the opportunity our players need, because the difference between the level of the South African league and the level we faced in recent weeks is very significant. This gap can only be narrowed when players participate in strong and challenging competitions."
He concluded: "It's not by playing a single match against Argentina or Ghana that your level will suddenly rise; it's entirely different. Ultimately, we can only hope that our players get the opportunity and succeed in taking the necessary step."
The South African national team exited the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-1 defeat to Cameroon in their Round of 16 match, held on Sunday at the City Stadium in Rabat.
