Freddy (35), Angola Captain, Announces Retirement: "It's Time to Hand Over the Armband to Young Players"
Angola captain Freddy has announced his retirement from international football, immediately following yesterday's 0-0 draw against Egypt in the final group stage match of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The 35-year-old stated in the post-match press conference: "Certainly, this will be my last match with the national team. I had made this decision beforehand."
He added: "I have given everything I have, body and soul, for this country. I believe the time has come for me to hand over the jersey and the captain's armband to the young players. I think I have been a proper role model for them, and I hope they understand that and continue further than I did."
