Zambia Coach Moses Sichone on AFCON 2025: "Took Over at a Difficult Time, Morocco Promises a Great Tournament"
Zambia national team head coach Moses Sichone has emphasized the challenging nature of his team's group in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which includes hosts Morocco, Comoros, and Mali.
Sichone acknowledged the limited time available for preparation after taking over the role last November, succeeding Avram Grant. He stated: "I took over at a difficult time, and there's been limited time to prepare for the tournament. It will be a fantastic tournament in Morocco, with excellent stadiums and exceptional fans."
Regarding his group opponents, Sichone highlighted the tough challenge posed by hosts Morocco, whom he described as the favourites to win the title. He also noted that Comoros and Mali present strong opposition due to their diverse talents. He added: "Our goal is to qualify for the Round of 16 and perform at a level befitting us."
Zambia's new technical staff includes Andrew Sinkala and Perry Mutapa as assistant coaches, Kennedy Mweene as goalkeeping coach, and Joseph Musonda as fitness coach. The team began its tenure in November with two friendly matches against South Africa and Angola.
The squad for the tournament features prominent professionals such as English Premier League side Leicester City striker Patson Daka and Italian Serie A club Cagliari midfielder Joseph Lettiya, alongside a mix of local players and professionals based in Europe and the Gulf region.
Zambia, champions of the 2012 edition, will be making their 19th appearance in the tournament, having exited the last edition at the group stage. The team will hold a preparatory training camp in Spain until December 17, ahead of their opening match against Morocco in the tournament.
