Hakimi: 'My Efforts Recognized After Three Nominations; Hope to Return Next Season'

Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi was crowned the African Player of the Year for 2025 on Wednesday evening. The award ceremony took place at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat, the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco.

Following his triumph, Hakimi told beIN Sports channels: "This is the third time I've been on the shortlist, and throughout my life, I've worked hard to develop myself and become a better player."

He continued: "Today, my years of effort are being recognized, and I personally hope to return again next year."

Hakimi ended a 27-year wait for Morocco by winning the prestigious award, recognizing his efforts throughout the past season. He becomes the first Moroccan to claim the Golden Ball since Mustapha Hadji in 1998.

Looking back, the Moroccan international's nomination was a testament to his performance last season. He was one of the most prominent architects of Paris Saint-Germain's success, leading them to win a number of titles, most notably the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history.
