Somali Referee Artan After US Entry Ban: "Despite the Circumstances, I Am Optimistic and Focused on Future Challenges in My Career"
Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has expressed optimism despite being denied entry into the United States, a decision that prevents him from participating in the 2026 World Cup finals.
In a statement reported by "ESPN," Artan clarified that he is dealing positively with the decision, stating: "Despite the circumstances, I am optimistic and focused on the upcoming challenges in my refereeing career."
The Somali referee also extended his gratitude to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for their support, adding: "I thank FIFA and CAF for all the support they have given me, and I will continue to work to maintain my refereeing level and focus on the future."
He continued: "I thank the football family for their messages of support, and I wish my colleagues good luck during the World Cup, and I look forward to meeting them in future competitions."
US authorities had prevented Artan from entering the country immediately upon his arrival at Miami International Airport from Istanbul, despite him possessing a valid entry visa, according to Somali officials.
FIFA confirmed on Monday evening that the Somali referee will not officiate matches at the 2026 World Cup, explaining that immigration procedures and visa issuance remain the prerogative of the host country. FIFA added that US authorities had informed them that Artan's status would not change at present.
