Chris Richards Injury Disrupts USMNT World Cup Plans
The U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT) announced that defender Chris Richards has arrived at the training camp for a thorough medical evaluation following a torn left ankle ligament sustained while playing for his club, Crystal Palace, on May 17. Doubts currently surround the player's ability to participate in the upcoming World Cup finals due to the nature of the injury, which affects two ankle ligaments and requires an intensive rehabilitation program in Fayetteville.
Richards will officially miss Sunday's friendly match against Senegal, as the coaching staff decided he should remain to continue his rehabilitation process instead of traveling with the squad to Charlotte. USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino explained that the next few days will be crucial in determining the player's readiness for the global tournament, stating: "We need to monitor him. The coming days will be key to knowing whether he can be ready to participate in the World Cup or not."
Pochettino emphasized the need for caution in managing the center-back's physical condition, indicating his preference for Richards to complete his treatment program under the supervision of the medical and sports performance staff rather than rushing his return to the field. The Argentine coach added: "I think he needs to continue with the rehabilitation process, and it's better for him to stay here to plan for training and re-evaluate his condition next week."
Chris Richards' absence presents a significant defensive challenge, especially given that the center-back position is one of the shallower areas in terms of available player options for the United States. Notably, the player missed the 2022 World Cup due to a previous hamstring injury. The coaching staff now faces time pressure as the deadline for submitting the final 26-player squad to FIFA approaches on June 1, although regulations allow teams to replace injured players until June 11.
