Reports Indicate Slow Ticket Sales for US 2026 World Cup Opener
Media reports have revealed a slowdown in ticket sales for the United States' opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Paraguay, scheduled to take place at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on June 13. A document issued on April 10 indicated that only 40,934 tickets had been sold for this fixture, a figure lower than sales for other matches set to be held at the same stadium during the tournament.
These figures have raised concerns about fan attendance, particularly as FIFA has classified the match as the third most expensive fixture of the World Cup, after the final and semi-finals. However, a FIFA spokesperson refuted these numbers, asserting that World Cup ticket sales remain strong with significant interest in all matches, including those highlighted. The spokesperson stated in response to recent leaks that it is "misleading and irresponsible to publish such figures as confirmed facts."
In contrast, the match between Iran and New Zealand, also hosted at SoFi Stadium three days after the opener, recorded sales of 50,661 tickets. Tickets for categories one and two for the USA match remain available at prices reaching €2,321 and €1,649 respectively. This situation might prompt FIFA to consider reducing prices to ensure the stadium's full capacity of 69,050 seats is utilized for this anticipated encounter.
In related news, FIFA President Gianni Infantino previously announced that nearly 5 million tickets had been sold out of a total of 6.7 million allocated for the tournament. Despite the lower figures for another US match against Turkey on June 26, organizers are banking on increased demand as the global event approaches and tickets become available through official resale platforms.
