Vancouver Authorities Reject FIFA President's Request for Presidential-Level Security
Vancouver city authorities have rejected a request from Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), for Level 4 security escort during his participation in the 76th FIFA Congress. Reports indicated that this security level would have allowed his motorcade to bypass red lights and close traffic, a protocol local officials deemed incompatible with the city's established standards for hosting international dignitaries.
Media reports suggested that Infantino's request included "full Level 4 escort," a measure equivalent to the protection afforded to the President of the United States and surpassing the security protocol for the Canadian Prime Minister. Justifying its decision, the City of Vancouver stated: "Appropriate and balanced transportation arrangements consistent with how Vancouver safely hosts major international events," a clear indication of its refusal to grant the head of the international organization exceptional traffic privileges that would disrupt city movement.
This tension arises amid complex relations between Canada and FIFA regarding the organization of the 2026 World Cup, for which FIFA has presented what have been described as burdensome organizational demands to host cities. Amid these preparations, challenges emerge concerning the estimated hosting cost, ranging between one and two billion dollars, as Canada prepares to host 13 matches split between the cities of Toronto and Vancouver, as part of a joint bid with the United States and Mexico.
