Infantino Confirms Iran's Participation in 2026 World Cup, Matches to Be Played in United States
Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), confirmed on Thursday that Iran will officially participate in the 2026 World Cup finals, ending anticipation that had arisen due to geopolitical tensions with the United States and Israel.
In statements made ahead of the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Canada, the head of the international organization clarified that the Iranian national team would play its matches on American soil, as the United States is one of the host nations for the global event.
Gianni Infantino stated when discussing tournament arrangements: “I want to first and unequivocally confirm that Iran will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup and will, of course, play its matches in the United States.” This definitive statement comes after reports indicated that the Iranian side had previously considered boycotting or requesting to move their matches to Mexico due to ongoing regional conflicts that had lasted for over two months and directly impacted the national team's sports preparations.
The Iranian delegation canceled its attendance at the FIFA Congress events in Canada, citing what it described as improper treatment by immigration police upon arrival in Toronto. Despite these organizational and diplomatic challenges, the presence of the Iranian national team, nicknamed “Team Melli,” has been confirmed in Group Seven of the tournament to ensure the completion of the international competition schedule planned for North America.
