FIFA Officially Announces Red Card for Players Leaving Field in Protest at 2026 World Cup
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced today, Tuesday, the approval of two new amendments to the Laws of the Game. These changes will be implemented starting from the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the aim of combating discriminatory and inappropriate behavior.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) sanctioned the use of a red card for players who leave the field of play in protest against a referee's decision. This new measure also extends to any team official who incites players to abandon the pitch.
FIFA further clarified that a referee may show a red card to any player who covers their mouth during an altercation with an opponent, if the latter claims to have been subjected to abuse or inappropriate conduct.
The international football governing body indicated that, in principle, a team causing a match to be abandoned will be considered to have forfeited. It added that the 48 national teams participating in the 2026 World Cup will be informed of these amendments in the coming weeks.
