Greek Donis Tipped to Lead Saudi National Team for 2026 World Cup, Succeeding Renard
Media reports indicate that the Saudi national team is close to appointing Greek coach Georgios Donis to lead "Al-Akhdar" during the 2026 World Cup finals, succeeding Frenchman Hervé Renard.
According to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper, a final agreement has been reached between the Saudi Football Federation and Greek coach Georgios Donis, who currently manages Al-Khaleej Club. The official announcement is expected in the coming days, pending the finalization of contract details.
The same source indicates that Donis is expected to commence his duties with the Saudi national team starting May 22nd, immediately following the conclusion of the domestic season. He will continue to lead his current club until that date.
The prospective coach will also oversee the Saudi national team's preparations for upcoming commitments, including friendly matches, most notably a fixture against Ecuador.
Renard had previously disclosed in a statement to Agence France-Presse (AFP) that he was concluding his role as head coach of the Saudi national team, thereby opening the door for a new era in the team's leadership.
Reports suggest that Donis will be with "Al-Akhdar" for the Gulf Cup, scheduled to be held in Jeddah next September, followed by the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, which Saudi Arabia will host.
It is worth noting that the Saudi national team is in Group H of the 2026 World Cup, alongside Spain, Uruguay, and Cape Verde.
