Iraqi Government Announces Honors Package for "Lions of Mesopotamia" After World Cup Qualification, Including Diplomatic Passports and Homes
The Iraqi Council of Ministers has announced a package of honorary measures for the "Lions of Mesopotamia" national team, in recognition of their historic achievement of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The Council affirmed that these decisions are in appreciation of the national team's accomplishment, noting that they will be presented for approval during the upcoming session before official implementation.
The announced measures include granting specially designed residential homes near Baghdad International Airport to the national team players and members of the coaching and administrative staff. Additionally, all team members will receive diplomatic passports, and a postage stamp will be issued to commemorate this achievement.
The initiatives also include the creation of a mural or monument on Abu Nuwas Corniche, featuring the names of the players and the qualification date. Furthermore, one of Baghdad's main streets will be named "Lions of Mesopotamia Street," a designation that will also be extended to other governorates.
In the same vein, a special museum or wing will be established within the headquarters of the Iraqi Football Association and the Sports City. A section will also be dedicated within the Government Palace Museum to document the team's journey, player names, jerseys, and qualification photos.
It was also decided to name this year's graduating classes in public and private universities and colleges as the "Lions of Mesopotamia Class." Additionally, a special song will be produced with the participation of several artists to celebrate this football achievement.
This tribute comes amidst widespread celebrations by Iraqi fans, following the national team's qualification for the World Cup – a historic achievement not realized in 40 years.
