French Clubs Clash with DR Congo Federation Over World Cup 2026 Celebrations
The Democratic Republic of Congo is preparing for extensive celebrations in the capital Kinshasa this weekend, marking the national team's qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, this celebratory program has sparked a legal dispute with French clubs Lille and Lens, who accuse the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) of unilaterally detaining international players and preventing their timely return to their respective clubs.
The official celebration program includes a popular reception at N'djili International Airport, followed by an official reception hosted by President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi. The President is expected to announce exceptional bonuses for the national team members in recognition of their achievement, securing a World Cup spot for the second time in the country's history. Their first appearance was in 1974, when they competed as Zaire. Notably, the 2026 edition will be the first to feature 48 participating teams.
This situation has, however, angered the management of Lille, who are missing defender Chancel Mbemba, while Lens is without Arthur Masuaku. Olivier Létang, President of Lille, stated: “The Congolese unilaterally decided to prevent the players from returning until next Monday, even though FIFA regulations clearly stipulate that players must return to their clubs 48 hours after a match.” He also confirmed that the club has officially escalated the matter to FIFA.
Létang added in his remarks: “The file is now in the hands of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee because it is a very serious legal precedent for all clubs committed to paying players' salaries, and the relevant authorities have already begun corresponding with the Congolese Federation.” This decision will result in Mbemba and Masuaku missing the highly anticipated 'Derby du Nord' in Ligue 1 this coming Saturday evening.
