DR Congo Qualifies for 2026 World Cup After 52-Year Absence
The Democratic Republic of Congo national team has officially secured its qualification for the 2026 World Cup finals after defeating Jamaica by a single goal in the final match of the qualifying play-off.
This victory came courtesy of a goal from player Axel Tuanzebe, who scored in the 100th minute of the first period of extra time, announcing the African team's return to the global stage after an absence of 52 years.
The encounter saw significant parity between both sides until Sibinga successfully delivered a precise corner kick, which Tuanzebe headed into the Jamaican net, securing the only goal of the match.
This qualification marks the Democratic Republic of Congo's second appearance in the World Cup finals. Their only previous participation was in the 1974 edition, when the country competed under the name Zaire.
The Congolese national team has become the 47th side to secure its place in the upcoming tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The team is scheduled to compete in the global competition within Group 11, alongside Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan.
