Wesley Sneijder Returns from Retirement at 41 to Join OSM 75
Former Dutch international Wesley Sneijder has returned to football after seven years of retirement, having initially retired in 2019. The 41-year-old signed a contract with OSM 75, a fourth-tier club in the Netherlands, which is coached by his brother Rodney Sneijder. This move marks the end of a long absence from professional football for Sneijder.
Sneijder made his debut for his new team, coming on as a substitute in the 70th minute of a match that saw his side secure a 1-0 victory over Focus '07. The game attracted over a thousand spectators eager to watch the former Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Ajax Amsterdam star. Commenting on his return, Sneijder stated, "I wouldn't have done it for any other club, I am here among my family members," emphasizing that family ties were the decisive factor in his decision to come out of retirement.
The match faced a potential legal challenge from Focus '07, who alleged a lineup irregularity. However, OSM 75 management clarified that one of the substitutions was mandatory due to a head injury, which is permissible under the regulations. Alexander de Mol, a club board member, praised Sneijder's historical standing, stating, "He should have won the Ballon d'Or in 2010, it was stolen from him." This remark highlighted Sneijder's illustrious career, which includes holding the record for most international appearances with the Dutch national team.
