Sneijder Returns from Retirement at 41 to Play in Dutch Fourth Division!
Former Netherlands international Wesley Sneijder has returned to professional football seven years after announcing his retirement in 2019. The 41-year-old signed a contract with OSM '75, a club competing in the Dutch fourth division, which is coached by his brother, Rodney Sneijder.
Sneijder made his debut for his new team, coming on as a substitute in the 70th minute of a match that saw his side defeat Focus '07 by a single goal. The game attracted over a thousand spectators eager to watch the former star of Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Ajax Amsterdam.
Commenting on his decision, Sneijder stated, "I wouldn't have done this for any other club; I am here among my family." He emphasized that family ties were the decisive factor in his reversal of the retirement decision.
The match faced a potential legal challenge from Focus '07, who alleged a lineup irregularity. However, OSM '75 management clarified that one of their substitutions was mandatory due to a head injury, which is permissible under the regulations.
Meanwhile, Alexander de Mol, a board member of the club, praised the player's historical standing, saying, "He should have won the Ballon d'Or in 2010; it was stolen from him." This remark alluded to the illustrious career of the player who holds the record for the most international appearances for the Dutch national team.
