Thomas Tuchel Explains Alexander-Arnold's England Squad Exclusion
England coach Thomas Tuchel has clarified the reasons behind Trent Alexander-Arnold's exclusion from the 35-player provisional squad for the upcoming World Cup finals, describing the decision as "very difficult." Tuchel stated that the team's new tactical direction demanded specific physical and tactical criteria for the right-back position, which impacted the Real Madrid player's chances of making the current national team setup ahead of the tournament, scheduled from June 11 to July 19.
The German coach attributed the exclusion to the adoption of a slightly different playing style, primarily relying on high intensity and aggressive attacking runs from the right-back position. He noted that injuries, which sidelined Alexander-Arnold from training camps in September, October, and November, hindered his ability to adapt to this system. Tuchel explained, "We have established a style based on intensity and positivity, especially in the right-back's offensive movements, which require significant physical effort." He added that the coaching staff found other players like Jarell Quansah, Tino Livramento, and Djed Spence to be more suitable options for this specific tactical approach.
Commenting on the player's Instagram post, which read "Madrid, and nothing else," Tuchel expressed his understanding of the reaction, deeming it "completely understandable" given Alexander-Arnold's desire to represent his country. The England coach emphasized that Alexander-Arnold's talent is beyond dispute. "I think we made a very difficult decision; his talent is unquestionable, as is his career and what he can offer to teams," Tuchel stated, hinting that current technical criteria ultimately favored other competitors in the present squad.
This controversy arises at a time when Alexander-Arnold has been performing well for his Spanish club under coach Álvaro Arbeloa, despite making only 20 appearances across all competitions this season due to injury. As the English Football Association prepares for two friendly matches against Uruguay and Japan, the focus remains on how Tuchel will balance individual talent with the demands of the collective system before heading to the global tournament.
