Scaloni: Messi Has the Right to Decide World Cup Future, Should Enjoy Experience
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni affirmed that captain Lionel Messi's top priority at the upcoming World Cup finals, should he officially decide to participate, is to enjoy the experience. He noted that Messi has earned the full right to choose his stance and determine his future with the national team.
Scaloni explained that the Argentine star is no longer obligated to win the title, having already secured the championship previously. This allows him to compete without additional pressure during what Scaloni described as theoretically the veteran star's last tournament.
Speaking at a press conference, Scaloni emphasized the need to give Messi ample space to make his decision. Scaloni stated: "The important thing is that he comes and enjoys it, if he ultimately decides to come. The most important thing is that he enjoys being at the World Cup, which is theoretically his last tournament, although I don't dare to say that word."
The coach further elaborated on his viewpoint, stressing that Messi's past achievements grant him a special status, allowing him to play with greater comfort, free from the urgent public demands for victory.
The coach continued by asserting that the pressure that previously accompanied Messi has now dissipated. Scaloni said: "I said before that he didn't have to win the title, and now that he has already done it, there is an even greater reason for him to go and enjoy playing."
He also drew attention to the importance of savoring the experience alongside his teammates, highlighting that the coaching staff appreciates everything the player has given to the squad over the years and does not wish to burden him with responsibilities beyond his personal desire to contribute.
These statements came in the context of preparations for an upcoming friendly match against Zambia, where Scaloni used the opportunity to discuss plans for managing playing minutes for the available players in the anticipated encounter. Through these matches, the Argentine national team aims to assess the physical and technical readiness of various squad members before engaging in the official competitions awaiting the team in the near future.
