Qatar Football Festival 2026 Canceled Due to Regional Tensions
The local organizing committee for the Qatar Football Festival 2026 announced the cancellation of the international sporting event, which was scheduled to take place in Doha from March 26 to 31.
This decision halts the planned activities, which were being prepared in cooperation with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL). These activities included the highly anticipated "Finalissima 2026" match between Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, and Spain, which would have pitted the Copa América champions against the European champions at Lusail Stadium on March 27.
The cancellation is attributed to ongoing airspace disruptions and travel restrictions stemming from regional security tensions, which hinder the safe movement of players, fans, and officials.
The committee confirmed in an official statement that relocating the match or events to another venue in the near future is the most suitable option, expressing Qatar's readiness to host similar events later in cooperation with the international federations.
In the same context, the statement clarified that all ticket holders can receive a full refund within 30 days via their original payment method, while travel agencies will handle refund procedures for international fans who booked travel packages.
The Egyptian national team was directly affected by this decision, as it had planned a training camp in Doha under the supervision of coach Hossam Hassan, including two friendly matches. One of these, against Saudi Arabia, has been relocated to Jeddah, while the other match against Spain, part of the festival's activities, has been definitively canceled.
The Egyptian Football Association is currently exploring alternatives for the camp and friendly matches to maintain their preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
