Giuly: 'Messi Took My Place at Barcelona; I Decided to Leave After Seeing Him in Training'
Former French star Ludovic Giuly has revealed the details behind his departure from Barcelona, confirming that the remarkable emergence of Argentine star Lionel Messi was the decisive factor in his decision to leave the Catalan club.
Speaking in an interview with Spanish newspaper "AS", Giuly stated that things were clear to him from the very beginning. He explained: "I had another year on my contract, but I left because when Messi arrived, I saw from the beginning what he was like and what he was doing in training. There's no problem with that, that's life. He took my place."
He added: "I can say it very calmly: 'Messi took my place.' And that's not a bad thing, is it? I have no problem with that. What he did after that, and how far he went, seems incredible to me."
Giuly played three seasons for Barcelona, during which he won the UEFA Champions League title in 2006, two La Liga titles (2005 and 2006), and two Spanish Super Cups (2005 and 2006).
