Messi to Start in Argentina's Final Pre-World Cup Friendly Against Zambia
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that captain Lionel Messi will start in Tuesday's friendly against Zambia. This match will be the "Tango" team's final appearance on home soil and in front of their fans before heading to the 2026 World Cup finals, a title they currently hold.
Speaking on Monday, Scaloni explained that the starting lineup would see the absence of Julián Álvarez and Nico González, who are being rested. Scaloni stated, "Messi will start. Regarding the changes, I wanted to give Julián Álvarez and Nico González, who had a previous injury, some rest. That was the idea, while maintaining our basic plan with reference strikers." He added that this decision is part of the strategy to manage the players' physical condition ahead of the global tournament.
The Argentine national team, winners of the last two Copa América titles, is preparing to begin their World Cup journey in Group 10. They will kick off their campaign against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16, following a series of preparations that included a 2-1 victory over Mauritania in Buenos Aires.
