Barcelona Plans Johan Cruyff Stadium for 2027-2028 Season Opener
FC Barcelona has revealed plans not to start the 2027-2028 season at their historic Camp Nou stadium, as renovation work enters its final stages, including the installation of tension rings and the new stadium roof.
The Catalan club aims to temporarily relocate its initial matches of the upcoming season to the Johan Cruyff Stadium, following sufficient expansion to accommodate fans and meet technical and logistical requirements.
In this context, the club's management has begun preparing the necessary reports to request official permission from the Sant Joan Despí municipality to expand the Johan Cruyff Stadium's stands by an additional 10,000 seats. Its current capacity is only 6,000 seats. This move comes in response to La Liga's requirements, which stipulate a minimum capacity of 8,000 seats to host official matches, ensuring the team complies with regulatory standards during its brief absence from its main stronghold.
Regarding the timeline, Barcelona's management expects all renovation work at Camp Nou to be completed by December 2027. This will allow the team to return and finish the second half of the 2027-2028 season in their updated stadium. The comprehensive development project, which began in June 2023, spans four and a half years, aiming for a total capacity of approximately 105,000 spectators, making it one of the largest stadiums globally.
