Araujo Reveals Battle with Depression and Seeking Professional Help
Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has opened up about his struggles with mental health issues during the current season, confirming that he sought professional help to overcome a difficult period that led to him being sidelined for over a month.
The Uruguayan international explained that he realized the necessity of medical intervention when he began to feel depressed and noticed a significant decline in his performance, in addition to observing negative changes in his personal behavior at home.
During a television interview on the "Universo Valdano" program on the Movistar network, Araujo recalled pivotal moments in his career, indicating that his team's match against Chelsea was the turning point that prompted him to seek help.
Araujo stated, "I knew something wasn't right and wasn't working properly, because one starts to feel a little depressed, and from a footballing perspective, a person doesn't feel capable of delivering what they truly know they can do as a player."
The defender mentioned that he began sharing his concerns with his wife before seeking professional help, admitting that the accumulation of pressure affected his interactions with his family. He said, "I spoke with my wife and told her that something was clearly happening to me; I needed help."
The player noted that cultural barriers initially made it difficult for him to express his feelings, but the worsening situation compelled him to break through this barrier and acknowledge his need for psychological support.
