Amrabat Suffers New Setback as Betis Opts Against Permanent Transfer After AFCON Injury
Moroccan international Sofyan Amrabat has suffered a new setback in his professional career after Real Betis' management decided against permanently purchasing his contract from Turkish club Fenerbahçe, following an injury he sustained this season.
Turkish media reports, including the "mynet" website, indicated that the Moroccan player's prolonged absence due to injury prompted officials of the Andalusian club to re-evaluate his situation. They subsequently decided not to activate the purchase option at the end of his loan spell.
Amrabat had a promising start with Betis, quickly adapting to the Spanish league and delivering impressive performances in his initial matches. This led the club's management to consider making his move permanent. However, the injury he sustained during his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations changed the circumstances and altered the Spanish team's plans.
The Moroccan midfielder moved to Real Betis last summer on loan, a move aimed at giving him an opportunity to regain his form in La Liga, especially after changes in Fenerbahçe's squad.
This season, Amrabat played 11 official matches for the Andalusian team, without scoring or assisting, before the injury sidelined him for a long period.
The player is expected to return to Fenerbahçe at the end of the current season, particularly as his contract with the Turkish club extends until 2028. His future, however, remains open to several options during the upcoming summer transfer window.
