Victor Font Accuses Laporta of Fostering 'Culture of Intimidation' at Barcelona
Victor Font, a candidate for the presidency of Spanish club Barcelona, has criticized his rival in the electoral race and current president, Joan Laporta. Font directly accused Laporta of imposing what he described as a "culture of intimidation" within the Catalan club. During statements made amidst the ongoing electoral campaign, Font explained that the current environment within the institution prevents many from revealing transgressions they witness behind the scenes, attributing this to pressures exerted by decision-making authorities.
Font highlighted practices he deems unfitting for a major sports institution, asserting that absolute loyalty to Laporta's approach has become an essential condition for remaining within the administrative system. "We know that many who have worked inside the club have witnessed things they believe are worth reporting, and which are not befitting an institution like Barça," Victor Font stated. "But they do not dare to explain them because we live under a culture of intimidation based on the principle of 'with me or against me'. The one who holds power has excessive force to compel people who should be free to explain what is happening." He emphasized that this power is used to influence individuals' freedom of expression and prevent them from clarifying the facts.
The presidential candidate further stressed that individuals who do not align with the administration's way of thinking are systematically marginalized, fostering a climate of fear among employees and club members regarding potential repercussions. These sharp criticisms emerge at a time when Barcelona is experiencing intense competition for the presidency, with each candidate striving to present their vision for reforming the administrative path and alleviating current pressures.
Regarding his vision for the future of the technical staff, Font expressed openness to Pep Guardiola's return, believing his talent should be utilized to serve the Catalan club. This escalation of criticism follows a period that saw former coach Xavi Hernandez voice previous criticisms regarding Laporta's handling of his departure, a controversy that prompted a media response from the current president in earlier interviews.
