Monaco Launches Judicial Inquiry into DR Congo Sponsorship Deal Corruption Allegations
The Public Prosecutor's Office in Monaco has opened a preliminary investigation into the contract concluded between AS Monaco and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). This action stems from allegations of corruption, embezzlement of public funds, and money laundering operations associated with the agreement signed between the two parties and its financial and legal implications.
Following a legal complaint filed in September 2025 by a lawyer representing Congolese citizens, the accusations have focused on the role of DR Congo's Minister of Sports, Didier Budimbu, in negotiating the deal. The allegations suggest he bypassed legal procedures related to tenders and official approvals customary for such international agreements.
Monaco's judicial authorities have deemed there are sufficient indicators to proceed with further investigation. There is also a possibility that the scope of these inquiries could expand to include other clubs, such as Spain's Barcelona and Italy's AC Milan, particularly as the Catalan club holds a sponsorship agreement with the Congolese government valued at approximately 44 million euros over four seasons.
Against the backdrop of these legal proceedings, previous criticisms directed by Amnesty International towards Barcelona regarding accusations of "sportswashing" have resurfaced. These criticisms were made in light of the humanitarian situation and armed conflicts in the African nation, further complicating the landscape surrounding recent sports sponsorship contracts signed with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
