
Portuguese Federation Expresses Security Concerns in Mexico Ahead of Azteca Stadium Inaugural Match in March
The Portuguese Football Federation has issued an official statement expressing its concern over the security situation in Mexico. The federation confirmed it would assess the situation in coordination with the Mexican government regarding its participation in the inaugural match at Azteca Stadium.
This move comes as part of preparations for the friendly match scheduled between the national teams of Mexico and Portugal on March 28. This game will mark the reopening of Azteca Stadium following its renovation, in readiness for the 2026 World Cup.
In its statement, the Portuguese Federation emphasized that protecting the Portuguese national team delegation is a top priority, stressing the necessity of ensuring the match takes place under safe conditions.
Mexico is set to co-host matches for the 2026 World Cup, alongside the United States and Canada, from June 11 to July 19.
