Reports: Mourinho to Lead Portugal National Team After 2026 World Cup
News reports indicate that Benfica coach, José Mourinho, has emerged as a strong candidate to lead the Portugal national team after the 2026 World Cup.
ESPN confirmed that Mourinho will depart Benfica at the end of the current season to take charge of the Portugal national team, succeeding Spanish coach Roberto Martínez, whose contract with the Portuguese Football Federation expires after the World Cup.
The same source also clarified that Mourinho will leave his position at Benfica to his compatriot, Rúben Amorim, who has expressed readiness to return to the Portuguese league after his unsuccessful spell with English club Manchester United.
It is worth noting that the Portugal national team is in Group 11 of the 2026 World Cup, alongside Uzbekistan, Colombia, and the qualifier from the playoff (DR Congo, Jamaica, and Caledonia).
