UEFA Updates Disciplinary Regulations for Warning Cards
UEFA has announced updates to the yellow and red card regulations in its club competitions, effective from the 2024/25 season. These amendments aim to clarify the disciplinary framework across UEFA's major club tournaments.
Specifically, players and team officials will face suspension from the subsequent match in the competition after accumulating three warnings that did not result in a red card, starting from the first match of the league phase. Suspensions will also be applied after every subsequent single warning (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.), according to the regulations. The UEFA Champions League regulations state: “From the first match of the league phase, players and team officials are suspended for the next match in the competition after three warnings that did not result in a red card, as well as after every subsequent single warning (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).”
Furthermore, individual yellow cards and pending suspensions will always be carried over to the next stage of the competition, except for cases mentioned in Article 63.04 of the regulations. The regulations also confirmed that any player or team official who receives a red card will be automatically suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The regulations specify: “Individual yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried over to the next stage of the competition, with the exception of cases mentioned in Article 63.04” and “Any player or team official who receives a red card will be automatically suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition.”
The regulations clarify that yellow cards are cleared at the end of the quarter-final stage. This means a player who receives two warnings in the two semi-final matches won by their team will not be barred from participating in the final. Similarly, warnings and pending suspensions due to yellow cards from the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Europa Conference League expire at the end of the season.
