Following Cairo Stadium Incidents: FAR Rabat Fans Demand CAF Expedite Sanctions and Implement Them This Season
The repercussions continue from the incidents witnessed during the match between Moroccan club FAR Rabat and Egyptian giants Al Ahly at Cairo International Stadium. The fixture, part of the sixth and final round of the CAF Champions League group stage, saw attacks targeting both fans and players of the Moroccan military team.
FAR Rabat supporters were reportedly subjected to projectiles thrown by some of the host team's fans. Video clips also documented some security personnel directing projectiles towards the stand allocated for the Moroccan fans, who attempted to defend themselves against the assault.
The events extended onto the pitch, where FAR Rabat players were pelted with bottles, resulting in an injury to Ahmed Hamoudan's hand. The attacks continued even after the final whistle.
Players received a barrage of bottles as they left the field, forcing the team to wait until the Egyptian fans had departed the stands before heading to the dressing rooms.
In this context, FAR Rabat fans have called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to expedite the disciplinary process and implement sanctions during the current edition of the competition, rather than postponing them until next season or applying them only in preliminary rounds. They argue that the severity of the events warrants immediate deterrence.
The Moroccan club's supporters recall the first-leg match between the two sides, when CAF imposed sanctions on FAR Rabat within less than a month, ordering them to play three matches behind closed doors. This precedent fuels the fans' demand for similar swiftness and firmness in addressing the incidents of the return leg.
The match ultimately ended in a goalless draw, a result that secured Al Ahly's top spot in the group. FAR Rabat finished second in the group, with both teams qualifying for the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.
