"Winners" Commemorate Al Ahly and Zamalek Martyrs During Wydad vs. Nairobi Match
The "Al-Winners" group, a fan faction supporting Wydad Athletic Club, commemorated the martyrs from Al Ahly and Zamalek fan bases during Sunday's match between the Red Team and their host, Kenya's Nairobi United. The game was part of the fifth round of the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
This humanitarian gesture honored the souls of fans who lost their lives in tragic incidents at Egyptian stadiums, most notably the Port Said massacre in 2012, which claimed Al Ahly supporters, and the Air Defense Stadium incident in 2015, involving Zamalek fans.
The Port Said massacre on February 1, 2012, following a match between Al Ahly and Al Masry, resulted in the deaths of 74 fans. It remains one of the darkest moments in Egyptian sports history, and Al Ahly, its players, and fans annually commemorate the victims as a sign of loyalty.
The Air Defense Stadium tragedy occurred on February 8, 2015, when approximately 20 to 22 Zamalek fans lost their lives before their team's match against ENPPI. This sorrowful event is etched in the history of the White Castle, and this year marks its eleventh anniversary, which the club and its prominent players annually commemorate.
The "Al-Winners" initiative received significant praise from Egyptian media, being hailed as an expression of solidarity among fan bases. It underscored that stadiums preserve the memory of their victims and that football remains a space for sporting values.
