Petkovic (Algeria Coach): 'Congo is a Balanced and Dangerous Team, but We Must Focus on Our Strengths and Capabilities'
Vladimir Petkovic, coach of the Algerian national team, praised his players' performance following their 3-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea in the third round of the Africa Cup of Nations group stage, considering it one of their best matches in the tournament.
During the post-match press conference, Petkovic affirmed that the Algerian team played the first half with great focus and clear patience, despite relying on a young squad lacking international experience. He noted that the team successfully imposed its style and controlled the flow of play from the outset.
He stated: "We had an excellent first half, and we started the match as we wanted, controlling the tempo and creating many chances, even though a number of players lack experience."
He added: "It's unfortunate that we conceded our first goal in the tournament, especially since we were the better side and created many scoring opportunities."
Regarding the upcoming clash against DR Congo, the "Greens" coach emphasized the current phase requires giving players some rest before resuming preparations, stressing that the technical staff will continue working with the same seriousness and enthusiasm.
He explained: "Now we need to rest well and regain our energy before returning to work. Congo is a balanced and dangerous team, but we must focus on our strengths and capabilities."
He further added: "We will analyze the positive and negative aspects, and I am confident that the team will be ready for this match."
Concerning defender Mohamed Tougai's injury, Petkovic said: "According to initial information, there is nothing alarming. He felt a slight pain and was substituted to avoid aggravating the injury. We will wait a day or two to know his health status more accurately."
The match between the Algerian national team and their Congolese counterparts is scheduled for next Tuesday at Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, kicking off at 5 PM, as part of the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16.
