US Adopts Tech Shield Against Drones for 2026 World Cup
US authorities have unveiled a multi-million dollar security strategy aimed at neutralizing and downing unauthorized drones over stadiums and fan zones during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This initiative addresses one of the primary security concerns for the tournament, which has been classified as a National Special Security Event. The plan focuses on detecting, tracking, and controlling these drones, with operations extending to airports and major transportation hubs across the country.
The United States has invested approximately $365 million in developing advanced systems designed to create a technological shield against drone threats. Jeff Flor from the King County Sheriff's Office, responsible for Seattle's security, highlighted the significant concern surrounding these threats. Flor stated, "One of the biggest concerns is someone trying to fly a drone with explosives into a World Cup event." Patrick Grandy, Deputy Director of the FBI's Los Angeles office, also noted sufficient technical preparations aimed at "downing" any unauthorized flying objects.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced the establishment of no-fly zones around all stadiums and fan events. Authorities have warned that violating these zones could lead to severe penalties, including federal imprisonment, fines up to $100,000, and drone confiscation. The strategy employs advanced technologies such as the "Cyber-over-RF" system, which provides electronic drone neutralization solutions without the need for direct physical force. However, Secretary of Homeland Security Marquayne Mullen acknowledged that the department is still working to improve its procedures for countering these aircraft.
These arrangements are part of preparations for the largest FIFA World Cup in history, featuring 48 participating nations and 104 matches co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Authorities aim to secure this massive sporting gathering through intensive security coordination, ensuring the safety of crowds and participating delegations in all host cities.
