Argentine star Lionel Messi has been awarded the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports 2026, making him the first footballer to receive this prestigious individual honor. The jury in Oviedo, Spain, announced its decision after deliberating among 27 candidates from 12 different nationalities. The jury praised what it described as the 'dazzling talent and exceptional sporting career' that has characterized the Argentine captain's journey over many years.
The committee, chaired by Teresa Perales, clarified that Messi's selection was in recognition of his continuous humanitarian efforts alongside his sporting excellence. Perales stated, regarding the reasons for his win, “In addition to his dazzling talent, exceptional sporting career, and immense and continuous solidarity work to promote access to education and healthcare for the most vulnerable children.” The committee also noted that the Argentine player has earned everyone's respect and admiration thanks to his exemplary conduct on the field, his humility, and his constant commitment to the spirit of teamwork.
Regarding the material prizes, the recipient of this global honor receives a monetary sum of 50,000 euros, in addition to a sculpture designed by artist Joan Miró, a diploma, and a special sash. This recognition further enhances Messi's historic record, as he has achieved 47 official titles in his professional career. He succeeds American tennis player Serena Williams, who won the same award in last year's edition, 2025.
