FIFA Announces Broad Disciplinary Amnesty, Clearing Otamendi and Caicedo for World Cup
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has confirmed an unprecedented amnesty for most disciplinary sanctions incurred during World Cup qualifiers, preventing key players from being suspended for the upcoming finals.
Among those benefiting from this decision are Argentina defender Nicolás Otamendi and Ecuador midfielder Moisés Caicedo, both of whom were sent off in their respective national teams' final qualifying matches.
Through this measure, FIFA aims to ensure that national teams can participate with their full strength in the major global event.
In an official statement, FIFA clarified that single yellow cards and pending suspensions for one or two matches will not carry over to the finals. The organization stated: "Single yellow cards and pending suspensions for one or two matches do not carry over to the final competition."
The statement also highlighted that this approach ensures teams "can compete with the strongest possible line-ups on men's international football's biggest stage."
Under this amendment, players will be required to serve their suspensions in other international competitions following the conclusion of the World Cup.
This measure originated from the FIFA Council, which includes Gianni Infantino and the presidents of the six continental confederations. It reinforces a previous directive that allowed Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo to avoid missing the World Cup despite being sent off in qualifiers.
While Otamendi received a direct red card for fouling an attacker and denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, and Caicedo received a second yellow card for a reckless tackle, both players will now be available for their national teams' starting lineups without any disciplinary restrictions carried over from the qualifying phase.
